Easy Basic Vinaigrette

When you want your main dish to steal the show but still want a salad… basic vinaigrette!

Vinaigrettes, when made with the right ingredients, are like a healthy wrapping to a salad.

Salad alone can be boring a bitter, but douse greens and accompanying veggies in a mixture of oils and vinegars and the whole thing is transformed!

I like a simple salad of greens and this standard vinaigrette when the main course is very flavorful by itself, or to stand by hardy dish that could use some refreshing greens.

Body-type and Wellness Insights

As I’ve mentioned for most if not all of my dressing recipes, but especially vinaigrettes; this type of dressing helps the body to prepare to digest foods better by activating stomach acids (vinegars) and salivary glands in the mouth (herbs, vinegars and sweet flavors). The activated juices of the mouth and stomach ensure that all body-types can digest and fully utilize the food they consume.

Earth-types do best on a largely vegetable diet. The catch is that Earth-types also gravitate towards rich, decadent dressings and sauces to accompany their veggies which counteract the benefits of the fresh veggies. Keep a wide variety of heathy dressing recipes on hand so that you can get the best of both worlds!

Fire-types may be leery of using vinegars due fear of acid reflux. It’s worth repeating that the most common cause of this ailment is lack of proper stomach acids which cascades into other digestive issues. While it seems initially counter-intuitive to take in acidic foods like vinegars, the nature of vinegars help to balance the chemistry of the stomach as well as providing healthy bacteria for later stages of digestion.

For Air-types, vinaigrettes are not only tasty, but they can provide the needed digestive boost. Having a lot of Air tendencies myself, I notice that eating a large amount of raw greens during the cool weather seasons leaves me feeling cold and not as energized as a warm meal. If this is the case for you, I suggest eating smaller raw salads and larger amounts of gently cooked veggies (sautéed, steamed or soups).

Water-types, similar to Air-types can especially benefit from the vinegar, herbs and spices in vinaigrettes and also may benefit from eating their veggies in a seasonal manner.
