Online and In-Person Classes with Matthew Wood

“A Real Live Herbalist”

Matthew Wood has been a practicing herbalist since 1982. In a period when many authors and lecturers are merely “arm chair herbalists” who offer theories and opinions based on book learning, and others have turned to the exotic traditions of India or China, he has been an active practitioner of traditional Western herbalism. He has helped tens of thousands of clients over the years, with many difficult health problems. While Matthew believes in the virtue of many other healing modalities, he has always been inspired to learn, preserve, and practice the tradition of herbal medicine descending to us from our European, Anglo-American, and Native American heritage. He is a member of the American Herbalists Guild (registered herbalist) and has earned his Masters of Science degree from the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine (accredited by the University of Wales).

The Musculo skeletal System, Chronic Pain and Lyme Disease

Available to watch online!

Matthew Wood, MS (Herbal Medicine),
Registered Herbalist (American Herbalist Guild)

Join us for a never before taught class with herbalist Matthew Wood! This two day work shop will cover the musculoskeletal system in detail as well as conditions that effect muscles, bones and their associated structures. From there we will move on to learn about the plant allies who assist in healing musculoskeletal issues. We are in a time where so many are turning to the medical community for support in managing their pain yet western medicine often does little or nothing to cure the underlying imbalance that is creating the pain in the first place! Matthew will teach us how to work with chronic pain in a way that not only addresses the symptoms but aims to heal the underlying imbalance in the body which is causing the pain. Finally, we will explore Lyme disease from the perspective of western herbalism and how to bring healing to the body in cases of acute or chronic Lyme.

In a time when chronic pain and Lyme disease are so prevalent we now more than ever need the tools to work with these issues, to cure the conditions rather than work with the symptoms!

Matthew Says:
“I heard several herbalists speak on pain and chronic pain issues this year and it dawned on me that I didn’t use any of these remedies. A suspicion arose in my mind and I asked another herbalist I knew was talented in this field: “do you use pain relief herbs or do you simply cure the condition so the pain is relieved?” The latter, she said. That is my experience. I don’t use “pain meds,” I use remedies that cure the underlying condition to remove the pain. In order work, effectively in this area we need to know the structure involved and the process. Then we do something about it. Only failure leads to working with the pain receptor, not the cause.”

Pulse and Tongue Evaluation

Available to watch online!

Matthew Wood, MS (Herbal Medicine),
Registered Herbalist (American Herbalist Guild)

Pulse and Tongue diagnosis dates back several thousand years and has been used by practitioners of Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine as a diagnostic tool to help determine the condition of disease or health of an individual. The tongue and pulse indicate a person’s state of health and paint a picture of the internal situation a person is dealing with at any given moment. Matthew has been practicing herbalism for thirty years and pulse and tongue diagnosis for 25 years. As the author of “Traditional Western Herbalism and Pulse Evaluation” co-written by Francis Bonaldo and Phyllis Light he is one of the foremost experts in translating these practices into tools for the western herbalist!

Pulse

The pulse evaluation methods that will be taught are based on both Chinese and Greek antecedents, with the emphasis on the basic, simple, important pulses showing basic tissue states: high/low, fast/slow, quick/rare (a Greek pulse), long/short, wide/narrow, regular/irregular, tense/relaxed, tight/loose, full/empty, hard/soft, strong/weak, choppy/slippery, thick blood/thin blood, and others.

Tongue

Matthew Woods tongue evaluation is based on Chinese antecedents, with two important additions from Ayurveda: differentiation of tongue types by tridosha: vata (dry, thin, medium to long), pitta (elongated, pointed, carmine red, muscular), kapha (thick, round, moist, sub-pink); and the differentiation between watery and oily secretions. Throughout we will refer to specific indications for herbs, mostly Western.

This class will be very hands on, with plenty of time to practice the techniques as we go. So don’t be shy, stick out that tongue! We will be looking at each others tongues and testing pulses during class.

The Endocrine System

Available to watch online!

Matthew Wood, MS (Herbal Medicine),
Registered Herbalist (American Herbalist Guild)

The endocrine cascade – hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, adrenals, gonads – is one of the most difficult systems to understand and treat so join us for this difficult subject demystified by master herbalist Matthew Wood. This class will give us an in-depth exploration of each of the major glands that make up the endocrine system and how to work with them using western herbalism. We will discuss common issues that are so prevalent in our society and the appropriate remedies. We will visit topics such as using adaptogens for the hypothalamus/pituitary/ adrenal axis, hyper and hypothyroid and its remedies, adrenal exhaustion and treatment, agents acting on hormonal regulation of reproduction and so much more! The importance of the Endocrine System for our health and wellbeing cannot be understated. To care for ourselves it is critical that we have an understanding of the system that truly affects all parts of our bodies and wellbeing!

“The endocrine system forms a “cascade” with dominance from the hypothalamus/pituitary downwards to the thyroid, adrenals, and gonads with a feedback loop back to the beginning. This is the basic endocrine core that we need to understand. The H/P is the master gland of the system, the adrenals are in charge of dealing with stress, the thyroid oversees cellular metabolic rate, and the gonads regulated both reproduction and life maintenance issues.” – Matthew Wood

Matthew Wood, MS (Herbal Medicine),
Registered Herbalist (American Herbalist Guild)

Join one of the nation’s most experienced herbalists, Matthew Wood, as he leads us in an exploration of the relationship between the realm of shamanism and practices and traditional use of herbs. Matt will build upon the foundation developed in the endocrine systems class two weeks prior deepen our understanding of the interrelationship between our bodies, the animals and the plants. We will move from the logical and literal into the dreamtime knowledge that exists in the world of spirit.

He will paint a picture of how to connect with the spirit of the plants through journeying and how to use the doctrine of signatures (what a plant looks like, how it is used by animals, their spirit signatures) to better understand the fullness of their medicine.
Then we move on to the use of animal medicine powers to help understand illness and find the right herbal treatments, the matching of people’s specific constitutions, personalities and cultural contexts to the herbal remedies. We will visit the medicine animals and explore how it is that these creatures embody specific archetypal energies that correspond to specific plants and their healing properties. Some examples are: Bear (burdock, angelica, spikenard)
Herbs can act as shamanic forces to open us up to with wisdom of Nature so join us to step out of the Materia medica and into the interplay of spirit, plant and animal wisdom!

We heavily recommend taking the Endocrine systems class prior to this as much of what we speak to will draw back to the knowledge shared in that class.

Matthew Says that in a previous edition of this class “many students got what an important lesson I was trying to convey: this material, mixing the doctrine of signatures, Nature Wisdom, animal and plant medicines, and endocrine typology reveals the underlying patterns of herbal medicine in a way that nothing else does.”
